Who is Dr. Maria Montessori? And how did the Montessori Method of Education Start?

The Montessori Method of Education was founded by Italian educator and physician, Dr. Maria Montessori.

Italy, August 31st, 1870, Dr. Maria Montessori was born. Her passion for knowledge and education showed since she was a child. She loved reading, a habit that she took after her mother. She studied many fields; engineering as a child, then medicine as a university student. Maria was one of the first female physicians in Italy when she graduated.

But that wasn’t enough for Dr. Montessori. She started to gain interest in the field of education too. And with her medical studies in pediatrics and psychiatry, she started to form theories on education for children with non-standard needs. Working as a Co-Director at a teaching institute at that time, gave her the opportunity to experiment and observe children.

In 1907, Dr. Montessori got the chance to open a multi-aged childcare center in Rome “CASA DEI BAMBINI”, the first Montessori house ever known. Where she designed her own materials to serve these young children with tools to educate themselves, while she observed and improved her method, according to each individual need.

Dr. Montessori’s method was based on keeping the children busy with work, giving them the space to move, choose and learn. And at the same time ensure their safety and provide them with guidance.

As time went by, the Montessori Method started to show success. Dr. Montessori dedicated her time and effort in spreading knowledge about her educational method through training teachers and giving lectures. Montessori schools got established all over Europe, followed by the first Montessori School in the United States in 1911. Today, Montessori Schools are found all over the world.

Amsterdam, May 6th, 1952, Dr. Maria Montessori passed away. Her cemetery is visited every year by fans, followers and believers of Dr. Montessori and her Method.
